ARTIST INFLUENCE - Denise Tierney

At the recent opening party for Gallery Merrick featuring Tim Hoey, I discovered an artist who really grabbed my attention, Denise Tierney. Her art brought forward memories of my childhood, I felt like I knew these women, were they my mom, my aunts, family friends or neighbours? Somehow all of them wrapped up in one? Regardless, the gravitation towards them is powerful and their familiarity is comforting.

A quote from Denise Tierney’s artist statement found on her website: “My artistic practice is rooted in memory (personal and collective), history, ritual, tradition, the transience of life and how experiences shape our identity. I explore themes based on societal underpinnings and present-day observations. I examine the role of ritual and the value to society of preserving traditional culture. Is there any room for nostalgia, or is it an outdated concept/word?”
